Texworld & Apparel Sourcing NYC Winter 2027 Registration Open

October 29, 2026

It’s fall, we’re reaching for our knits and watching what plays out in the world of textiles and apparel.

This year might have been quieter when it comes to tariffs than 2025, but a new move from the U.S. Administration could be “more disruptive than tariffs,” according to a recent article in HGI.

Donald Trump issued an executive order this summer calling for greater scrutiny over goods coming into the U.S., and that scrutiny could include anything from supply chain mapping to rules of origin changes and redefining what constitutes transshipment.

The potential for the impending customs changes to be onerous for the industry is high.

“If this is about customs asking for lots and lots and lots of information without using it to more effectively and efficiently focus on the bad players, then you’re going to see companies have to make additional investments and resources into demonstrating compliance,” American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) president and CEO Steve Lamar told HGI. “It could also end up overloading customs if they don’t have the ability to process that information. What we could also see is more enforcement efforts and activities coming from an administration that’s already very distrustful on importation. You put those two things together, and that can be the ingredients for very costly import supply chains. That’s one of the things that we’re going to have to work to try to prevent.”

For now, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol have opened a comment period before making any changes to its regulations, and Lamar says anyone shipping goods to the U.S. would be wise to put their two cents in. The comment period is open through December 1, 2026.
